Urinary Tract Infections: 14 Traditional Ayurvedic Recipes
Medically reviewed by Dr Girish Shirke, M.D. (Ayurved)August 31, 2026

Get these symptoms checked. Blood in the urine, a raised creatinine result, or fever with back pain need medical assessment rather than self-treatment, and an untreated urinary infection can reach the kidneys. The recipes below are for general urinary comfort alongside medical care.
What causes urinary infections?
Urinary infections are most commonly bacterial infections of the kidneys, urinary tracts, and the bladder. The most common route for the spread of infection (90%) is through the entry of bacteria from the skin around the rectum and genitals toward the bladder, which serves as a good environment for bacterial growth due to the presence of proteins, sugars, and favorable temperature.
The best natural solutions and home recipes
Top 14 natural recipes for treating urinary tract infections:
1. Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day
Whenever you develop urinary infections, the first thing you should do is drink plenty of water. This will increase urine production so that you can flush out bacteria during urination.
2. Empty your bladder regularly
Whenever you feel the urge to urinate, it is advisable to empty your bladder. You should also empty your bladder shortly after sex.
3. Avoid bladder irritants
You should limit the intake of bladder irritants, such as caffeinated drinks, carbonated drinks, and alcoholic beverages.
4. Apply heat to the abdomen
Lower urinary tract infections cause pain around the lower abdomen and pelvic area. Apply warm compresses.
5. Eat citrus fruits
It is difficult for bacteria to grow in an acidic environment. Citrus fruits contain large amounts of vitamin C, which increases the acidity of your urine, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth. You can also take vitamin C supplements, but you should consult your doctor before doing so.
6. Flush out bacteria with cranberry juice
Cranberries contain a phytochemical known as tannin, which reduces the vaginal colonization of E. coli. It contains a lot of vitamin C, and drinking its unsweetened juice flushes bacteria out of your urinary system and reduces recurrent urinary infections.
“Cautionary note: If you are on medication, consult your doctor before drinking cranberry juice as it interferes with certain types of medications, especially blood thinners.”

8. Drink blueberries
Like cranberries, blueberries are rich in vitamin C, which makes your urine hostile to bacteria. It also prevents E. coli from sticking to the bladder walls, allowing them to be easily flushed out during urination. You can eat them as fruit or drink their juice.
9. Increase your natural flora with probiotics
The wall of a woman's vagina is usually lined with lactobacilli, which acts as the body's natural defense against infection. Ensure a healthy supply of natural bacterial flora.
10. Relief with baking soda
“Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water.
Stir the soda until it is completely dissolved.
Drink the entire solution, preferably on an empty stomach.”
When the burning sensation while urinating becomes too much to bear, drink baking soda. The burning sensation may be due to the high acidity of the urine. Baking soda is alkaline, so it will reduce the acidity of the urine or neutralize it. But do not overdo it. Stick to 1 glass a day and do not drink it for more than a week.
11. Refresh yourself with parsley water
“Boil 1 to 2 cups of water.
Add fresh, chopped parsley or 2 tablespoons of dried parsley.
Let it simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
Strain it and drink it (hot or cold).”
Apigenin, the main component of parsley, has diuretic as well as anti-inflammatory properties. Diuretics release excess water from your body in the form of urine, which will flush out the bacteria present in the bladder and urethra. The anti-inflammatory property of parsley will soothe the infection and help your body heal.
12. Garlic water
“Crush 5 to 6 cloves of fresh garlic.
Soak them in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes.
Drink the water throughout the day.”
Garlic is a potent remedy for urinary tract infections. It has antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties and immune-modulatory effects that help in the treatment of cystitis.
13. Soothe your infection with ginger tea
“Add 2 tablespoons of fresh ground ginger to boiling water.
Let it simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
Strain it and drink 2 to 3 cups a day. Add honey for better taste.”
Ginger has antimicrobial properties that act against various bacterial strains.
While chewing a piece of ginger will have positive effects, it is best to consume it as a tea for treating urinary infections. The more fluid you drink, the faster you flush out the bacteria.
14. Relieve urinary problems with sips of green tea
“Add a spoonful of green tea to hot water.
Let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes.
Strain it and drink it.”
Catechin is a component of green tea that has antimicrobial properties. Green tea also has diuretic properties that help in flushing out bacteria from your urinary system. You can drink 4 to 5 cups of warm green tea throughout the day.
15. Easy urination with marshmallow root
“Add 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh marshmallow root to a cup of boiling water.
Let it simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
Strain it and drink it warm.”
Marshmallow root has diuretic properties, which also make it good for treating kidney stones. Because marshmallow root has a thick, sticky consistency, it eases the flow of urine. You can drink it as a tea 2 to 3 times a day.
