Turmeric and Ginger Tea: A Warming Drink for Cold Season
Medically reviewed by Dr Girish Shirke, M.D. (Ayurved)August 31, 2026

When the season of viruses and colds arrives, nature, as always, is here to offer us its best helpers. Honestly, turmeric and ginger tea is not just a tasty drink; it is a true "liquid shield" for our body, a kind of elixir. These two powerful herbs, which have been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years, work hand in hand to defeat inflammation and significantly speed up recovery. You might be surprised, as I was, by their synergistic effects.
Why is the combination of turmeric and ginger so effective?

You have surely heard of turmeric as the "golden spice" of Ayurveda. Its most important ingredient, curcumin, is known for its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help protect our cells from damage. On the other hand, there is ginger – which functions as a natural antibiotic. It warms the blood, stimulates sweating, and is excellent at flushing toxins from the body. Together, they are truly an unbeatable combination.
What are the main benefits of this natural remedy?
Fast symptom relief: It is very effective for sore throats, coughs, and a stuffy nose – tried and tested.
Powerful anti-inflammatory effect: If you are facing joint and muscle pain, which often accompanies a cold, this tea can help you.
Detoxification: It helps in purifying the liver and improves the digestion process – something we all need.
Immune support: These herbs are rich in important minerals like manganese, magnesium, zinc, and, of course, vitamin C.
Recipe: How to prepare homemade turmeric and ginger tea

To get the maximum benefits, my advice is to always use fresh ingredients whenever you have the chance.
What you need:
4 cm fresh ginger root
4 cm fresh turmeric root (if you don't have fresh, 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder will do)
1 freshly squeezed lemon – for freshness and vitamin C
1 large pinch of black pepper – this is crucial for activating the curcumin, don't forget it!
1 tablespoon of natural honey (add it when the tea cools down a bit, so it doesn't lose its properties)
500 ml water
The preparation method is simple:
First, peel the ginger and turmeric. Important: use gloves for the turmeric, trust me, you don't want orange fingers!
Then, finely grate them (or chop them) and put them in a pot with water.
Once the water boils, reduce the heat and let it simmer for another 5-10 minutes.
Strain the tea into a cup, then add the lemon juice and the pinch of pepper.
When the tea reaches a pleasant room temperature, sweeten it with honey to your taste.
A little tip from me: The use of black pepper is truly necessary! The piperine in the pepper increases the absorption of curcumin in the body by no less than an incredible 2000%! That is the difference between "okay" and "excellent."
Curcumin in capsules: A solution for maximum effect?

While tea is wonderful for daily use, regular turmeric as a spice contains only about 2-5% curcumin. If, however, you are facing more serious chronic inflammation or a significant drop in immunity, you need a much higher concentration. That's where capsules come in.
Curcumin, for example, is a high-potency extract obtained exclusively from the core of the plant. Unlike the spice, these capsules offer:
High concentration of active ingredients.
Fast and efficient absorption – of crucial importance.
100% natural and vegan composition, without unnecessary additives.
Let's not forget: Turmeric is more than a cold remedy
Turmeric is not just your best friend when you have a cold. Its action is much broader, and I personally am fascinated by its versatility:
1. Golden honey for a sore throat
The combination of turmeric and honey is known as "Golden Honey." This is one of the strongest natural antibiotics used in Ayurveda. Not only does it increase beneficial flora in the intestines, but it also immediately soothes a sore throat.
2. Natural skin care (Turmeric mask)

Yes, turmeric also helps with a glowing complexion. Try making a simple mask with 2 tablespoons of turmeric and 2 tablespoons of yogurt – you will get a clear and smooth complexion without blemishes. Trust the ancient wisdom!
3. Heart Health and Mental Balance
In my opinion, the most interesting thing is that studies show curcumin can improve cardiovascular health. Furthermore, there are indicators that it can also help improve mood in individuals facing stress and depression. Truly a complex herb!
Conclusion
Whether you choose warm turmeric and ginger tea for immediate relief or highly concentrated Curcumin capsules for long-term support, incorporating this herb into your daily routine is, in my opinion, one of the best decisions you can make for your health. Nature offers real support – it is up to us to discover and use it.
