Bacterial Vaginosis: Everything you need to know about symptoms and natural treatment
Medically reviewed by Dr Girish Shirke, M.D. (Ayurved)September 5, 2026

What is bacterial vaginosis and why does it occur?
Statistics show that 1 in 5 women experience an episode of bacterial vaginosis by the time they turn 50. Bacterial vaginosis is a very common and treatable vaginal infection caused by bacteria. The vagina has protective microbes and an acidic pH level that prevent the overgrowth of harmful bacteria. However, whenever there is an imbalance in the vaginal pH and the protective bacterial count, an infection can develop. This shift in balance often occurs due to reasons such as multiple partners, an IUD, or the application of perfumed products to the vagina.
Most common symptoms of bacterial vaginosis
Symptoms you must not ignore:
Vaginal discharge that is white or gray in color with a fishy or musty odor.
Foamy or clumpy vaginal discharge that leads to cloudy urine.
Pain and a burning sensation around the vagina and during urination.
Vaginal skin appears red and feels sensitive.
8 natural treatments for managing symptoms
Do not wash the genital area with harsh products
The vagina and the perianal area are the most sensitive areas of the body. Refrain from using soaps or deodorants containing chemicals on these areas. This is to prevent the imbalance in vaginal pH and microflora that can be caused by chemicals. Use only warm water to keep your vagina clean during an infection and avoid soap entirely.
Maintain proper intimate hygiene
To aid a faster recovery, it is best to wear clean and light cotton underwear during bacterial vaginosis. Do not use scented paper, sanitary pads, or tampons if you have your period during the infection. Change pads or tampons every 4-6 hours to keep the infection under control. Always keep the vaginal area dry and do not wear tight or damp underwear.
Make time for daily sitz baths
A warm sitz bath is the best way to soothe the inflamed genital and anal area. All you need to do is find time to bathe at least twice a day. A sitz bath relieves inflammation, improves circulation, and thereby promotes the healing of affected vaginal tissues. You can even add apple cider vinegar, baking soda, or tea tree oil to the tub for enhanced antimicrobial action. Fill the tub with warm water and add 1-2 cups of organic apple cider vinegar, or add 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda or 2-3 drops of tea tree oil. Soak the lower part of your body for 15 minutes. Dry the genital area thoroughly.
Make coconut oil part of your lifestyle
Coconut oil is known as an antibacterial and antifungal agent. Several scientific studies have identified that coconut oil can be a cost-effective home remedy for bacterial vaginosis. You can soothe irritated vaginal tissues by directly applying coconut oil. When consumed through your diet by cooking with it, coconut oil can regulate blood sugar levels and boost immunity.
Do not douche under any circumstances
Follow our tips for maintaining intimate hygiene and preventing vaginal infections for better health.
Many women are under the misconception that washing the vagina with water via douching can rid them of bacterial vaginosis. However, this practice can lead to the removal of healthy vaginal bacteria. Long-term studies have proven that it can actually worsen the infection.
Follow an alkaline diet
An alkaline diet is the best way to make your body an unsuitable environment for bacterial growth. Microbes flourish in an acidic pH, and alkaline foods will prevent the pH imbalance from occurring in their favor. Include these foods in your diet if you are currently suffering from bacterial vaginosis:
• Fresh fruits and vegetables such as mushrooms, dates, raisins, spinach, grapefruit, tomatoes, avocado, broccoli, oregano, garlic, ginger, green beans, cabbage, celery, beetroot, watermelon, figs, and ripe bananas.
• Plant-based proteins like almonds and beans.
• Make your drinking water alkaline by adding lemon or baking soda to it.
• Fresh juice made from green leafy vegetables or wheatgrass, as the chlorophyll in them helps alkalize the blood.
Increase probiotic intake
Probiotics are excellent for increasing gut flora and beneficial bacteria in the body. Make sure to supplement your diet with cultured or fermented foods containing active lactobacilli. These include foods like yogurt, kefir, and kombucha.
Practice safer sex
Discover the common symptoms and causes of vaginal infections, as well as natural ways to treat and prevent them.
During bacterial vaginosis, vaginal immunity is low. This makes it very vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections. To be on the safe side, refrain from sex or use protection, such as condoms. This will not only prevent the spread of infection to your partner but also protect your vagina from other harmful microbes. Oral sex is also not recommended during bacterial vaginosis as it increases the chances of transmission.
Especially in pregnant women, bacterial vaginosis can be life-threatening for the developing fetus. To prevent complications, consult your gynecologist immediately if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Practice the tips mentioned above, relieve stress, and rest to speed up recovery.
Ayurvedic treatment for bacterial vaginosis
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of natural medicine, offers effective solutions for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis by balancing the body's doshas and using natural remedies. To treat bacterial vaginosis, we recommend using the following Ayurvedic remedies:
The power of Neem capsules
An ancient Indian herb used since before 5000 BCE.
The name of this magical tree comes from the word nimbati, which translates to "to give excellent health." Literally every part of the tree has its use.
